Name That Newsletter

Well, it’s time to start churning out regular newsletters to everyone.  I want to try to make these as informative as possible, and make it fun to read, instead of something that just gets thrown away.  For our first one, I’d like to announce a contest to Name That Newsletter.  The winning entry will receive a $25.00 gift certificate to be used at Discount Hobbies.  Send your suggestions for a name for our Newsletter to me, via email (grippm@bellsouth.net) , or mail to my home on a postcard.   Officers of the club are not entitled to submit an entry.  The winning entry will be selected by blind selection by the President, Vice-President & Treasurer.  Get the entries in early, name selection will take place on May 30. 2003.

If you have any ideas, articles, or stories for the newsletter, please email me, or call me to get it submitted.

Safety Notes

This column will soon become “Rants & Raves from the Safety Officer”.  Until then, here are just a few notes.

Now is the time to review our list of club rules, and AMA rules.  We are an AMA sanctioned club, so to protect our charter with AMA, make sure you know and abide by the AMA code.  Also, it is important to read our local rules and regulations.  The land is leased from JEA, with certain restrictions that we must follow in order to keep our insurance active, and protect JEA and their property.

Of particular interest is some of the following:

  1. Make sure you pull the correct frequency pin and place your AMA card, or some other ID in it’s place, BEFORE you turn on your radio.
  2. ABSOLUTLY no firearms, alcohol, or illegal substances are allowed on field property at ANY time.
  3. No flying over the JEA plant, or behind the flight line.
  4. All take-offs and landings should be in the direction of the flight arrow in the pilot’s box.
  5. You must have a VALID AMA membership and card to fly a plane at WTRC, unless you are on a buddy cord with one of the club trainers.

President’s Corner

This will soon be a monthly news and notes feature by Tim.  Nothing this month, mostly due to me not pestering him enough.

Field Notes

This column will be used to inform you of any changes in parking, field closures, or any other general items of interest about the field itself.

Right now, the Bermuda grass is coming up fine.  We had a weak application of 10-10-10 fertilizer last month, and we anticipate putting down some ammonia nitrate sometime in the next 15 days.  That should give it a good kick to get the growing season started.  To help keep the grass in good condition in the pit area, if you are going to break in an engine, or run it on the ground for an extended period, please take it to one of the extreme ends of the pit area to do so.  Even a couple of minutes of running an engine stunts the grass, and it takes weeks to recover.

Good news on mowers.  Jeff Layman was able to get us a free tractor.  He and Tim put a little work into it, Jimmy Gibson is modifying the blades, and given that, we should have 4 mowers running shortly.   Any help that can be given on Thursday, or Friday evenings, or Saturday mornings for cutting the grass is greatly appreciated.

On the parking situation, we are parking more towards the north end of the field in order to allow the grass to recover where we parked and trampled all winter and so far this spring.  If we can ever get the grass to grow from the center down to the south, we’ll open that area up.

White lines (crop circles) all over the place.  Bet your wondering what’s up with all the white lines and circles that have been appearing at the field lately.  In the center of the runway you’ll start noticing a circle with lines extending down the runway in both directions.  This diagram is for us simple minded plane jockeys.  The intent is to get you to start taking off and landing in the center of the runway, instead of being all over the place.  Additionally, we’re getting you more used to competition type flying, where your wheels come up, and wheels touchdown, inside that circle.  For the circles closer to the fence/pilot’s box, those are for our heli pilots, for their takeoffs and landings

BS From the Hangar

In the corner, you’ll be able to find notes not immediately related to WTRC, or the field.  Such as:

DISCOUNT HOBBIES has moved……Mickey has moved his shop to a new location at   68 Ridgecrest Dr, new phone number is 731-660-4448.  Ridgecrest is the road north of Highland, directly across from Carraige house.  To find Discount Hobbies, turn onto Ridgecrest, start up the hill, the 2nd street to the right is Lamar.  Turn there, and the shop is on your left, parking and entrance in back.

Donation lookout

No newsletter would be complete without some form of begging going on.  This section will be used to alert the membership of any items or materials that would be nice to have, or needed, but we can’t really afford at this point.  We have a pretty diverse group of folks in the club, and you may have knowledge of something that we could use that could be gotten free, or low costs.  Right now, here are a few items we’re looking for:

  1. Gravel
  2. Shelves for the shed

Bag of Balsa of the Month

This area will be used to humiliate the most spectacular demonstration of uncontrolled landing of the month.  If you want to keep your own OOPS out of  this section, get your nomination to me.

Next Club Meeting

Next meeting will be May 10 at 2 pm, at the field.
